School Philosophy
Ling's Oriental Martial Arts provides an opportunity for individuals and families to learn and train martial arts in a safe and friendly environment that nurtures the mind, the body and the spirit as well as the greater community through social connections, diversity and cultural awareness.
Dr. Ling believes all students are equal yet unique. They deserve individual attention and instruction while maintaining unified general requirements and standards. Those hard working students who attend class regularly, pay attention and follow instructions are awarded with honorable recognition. Their achievements in turn will give a life time of benefits and rewards.
Our approach to oriental martial arts flows out of its primary purpose of self-defense. Observing that opponents and situations vary greatly, emphasis is given to recognition of opportunity to neutralize an attacker's strength and size by redirecting movement and mass, and by taking advantage of common human weak points.
The forms and techniques taught are at once beautiful and effective for defending against an attacker, but beyond the techniques lies the art of adaptation to individual circumstances and motives. As with any skill, practice of these martial arts will bring both mastery and confidence, and will become a trusted benefit to the diligent student.
